www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 2, 2007 - 21 Tour de Blue is cross-country relay trip Continued from page 20 Gilgan and Kemp both share the view that raising funds for research of pain management will be beneficial to all children at Sick Kids. "Pain is a problem that encompasses all the different areas really, medical, surgical, pediatric, anyone of them," said Kemp. "So everybody has a vested interest in trying to keep children's pain to a minimum." Gilgan and his group will depart Vancouver on June 12, and over the next 10 days, they will relay over 4,900 km. They will meet up with the additional cyclists on June 23 to finish the event. For those crossing the nation, it will be a test in endurance as they proceed through the Rocky Mountains and other interesting scenery along the way. "Well I think it's certainly an ambitious venture that they have going," said Judy Byrne, Travel and Events Co-ordinator for Mattamy Homes. "But it will be really interesting to see the different routings. They are going "This is different than going for a little ride down to Toronto. But when I started riding 10 years ago, going from Oakville to Toronto, I felt pretty good about that." Peter Gilgan CEO Mattamy Homes to be going between four to five hundred kilometres a day and it will be done on a relay kind of basis." Although he is no stranger to cycling, Gilgan admits that it has taken a lot of training to get ready for the journey. "I'm a committed cyclist, I guess average is a pretty reasonable word," said Gilgan. "But you also have to train. A guy like me, you know I'm a businessman, so there is a lot of preparation you have to do for this, to bring yourself up to a level where you can survive this. This is different than going for a little ride down to Toronto. But when I started riding 10 years ago, going from Oakville to Toronto, I felt pretty good about that." But even with all the hard work involved, the cause makes it more than worthwhile for Gilgan, who has been a strong supporter of community and fundraising events. Along with the Tour de Blue, Mattamy co-hosts the Annual Mayor's Invitational Softball Tournament, the largest annual fundraiser for the Oakville YMCA. Another event organized by Mattamy is the Mattamy Homes Motorcycle Poker Run, which raises money for the Children's Wish Foundation, which will be in its eighth year. "You know, we get from the community and I really think it's important we give back to the community," said Gilgan. "The trick is to find those things where we think we can make a difference, and we think they're meaningful. It's great for personal morale, if you will, and it's also great for the moral of the company." P A AN BAY CUSTOM INGROUND POOLS "Your Pool ...Our Reputation" Book Now! Save Now! Swim Now!
