www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 13, 2007 - 41 Buzz back on track after romp over Mimico The Oakville Buzz busted out of a mini-slump in a big way Sunday in Mimico. The Buzz, which entered the game with only one win in its past four games after opening the season with a 9-0-1 mark, righted the ship with a 145 pounding of the Mimico Mountaineers. Mimico had beaten the Buzz 10-9 in Oakville two days earlier to pull into a tie with the Buzz for top spot in the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B Southeast Division standings. The Buzz and Mountaineers were tied 3-3 in the first period Sunday before Oakville exploded, outscoring Mimico 8-1 over a 23-minute span and ending the second period with an 11-4 advantage. Josh Barrick paced the Buzz with a four-goal, four-assist effort. Dylan Gilbert added a hat trick and two assists, while Spencer Taugher had two goals and two helpers. Kevin Harper, Braden Gallant, Harry Hristopoulos, Ethan O'Connor and Mark Kingston also scored for the Buzz, with Jordan McKibbon, Scott Drysdale, Connor Gamble and Mike Bentivegna contributing assists. Cam Watts allowed only one goal in each of the final two periods to earn the win. Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, Oakville rallied to tie the game 9-9 before Mimico notched the winner with 3:04 to go in regulation time. Josh Ruys had four goals and two assists in a losing effort for the Buzz. Taugher (two), Reggie Traccitto, Gamble and Gilbert chipped in with singles, and Watts took the loss in goal. The 11-2-2 Buzz, two points ahead of Mimico for top spot in the Southeast and four points behind the East Conference-leading Clarington Green Gaels, will play a pair of road games in upcoming action. Oakville will travel to Mississauga Friday for an 8 p.m. clash with the Tomahawks, then visits Mimico again Sunday for a 7 p.m. start. The Buzz won't be home again until June 24 and 26, when it closes out the regular-season schedule with games against the Halton Hills Bulldogs and Barrie Tornado. Mental mistakes cost Longhorns in weekend loss Against an average team, the Oakville Longhorns might have been able to get away with a few mistakes. Defending national championship teams, however, have a tendency of making opponents pay for their errors. The Longhorns suffered their first defeat of the Northern Football Conference season Sunday in Oshawa, making a number of mental miscues -- particularly on special teams -- in a 24-16 loss to the 2006 Canadian champion Hawkeyes. Oakville head coach Barry Emo estimated mistakes on special teams cost the Longhorns 18 points, noting his squad missed a pair of makeable field goals and was also caught unprepared for a couple of Oshawa trick-punt plays. "My biggest responsibility is to ensure that my team is a disciplined, mentally-prepared football team, and it obviously wasn't (Sunday)," Emo said. "I'm going to take full responsibility for that one, and we'll work on things this week to get us more mentally prepared." The Hawkeyes, who lost their season opener 31-28 to the Tri-City Outlaws, came out firing and built a 17-2 halftime lead. The Longhorns (1-1) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, coming on Tommy Denison passes to Vaughan Swart and Kyle Kneller, to narrow the gap late. Denison will get the start in Oakville's next game, a visit to the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers this weekend, as Emo continues to evaluate the three quarterbacks on the Longhorns' roster. This weekend's lengthy trek north might be coming at the perfect time for the Longhorns. Emo expects the road trip will provide an opportunity for the squad, which features a number of new players, to bond. -- Jon Kuiperij Domestic Rapid Deployment Team Leader, Bill Ferris Deployments include Northern Response (Thunder Bay) & Peterborough Floods International Delegate, Bonnie Kearns Deployments include Afghanistan, Hurricane Katrina and 9-11 New York Seating is reserved.
