www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 16, 2007 - 7 MPP proud of programs particularly education record Continued from page 6 Four years ago, our post secondary system was failing our students. It was starved for funding because the Conservatives refused to make the necessary investments in our young people. Today, 86,000 more young people are in colleges and universities. Six thousand more are in apprenticeships. There are 12,000 more spaces for grad students. As well, we have doubled student assistance and are investing in 12,000 grants to low income kids. Less conflict, more positive results: that's the record. As a parent, I am particularly proud that the McGuinty government is investing in our children's futures. We'll have smaller class sizes because of $781 million in new investments for our students in schools. As well, we have invested $2.1 billion in the new Ontario Child Benefit that will help 600,000 families with nearly 1.3 million children. Instead of freezing the minimum wage like the Tories did for eight years, our government has raised it in a stable and predictable manner, and committed to gradually increasing the minimum wage to $10.25 by 2010, providing fairness and opportunity for working people. Without question, one of our most important obligations is to our environment -- to safeguard and protect our world for future generations. In Ontario, we are banning the sale of inefficient light bulbs by 2012 and launching five province-wide conservation initiatives. Ontario has worked with communities and the private sector to build more wind farms than any other province in Canada, going from worst in Canada under the Tories to first under the McGuinty Liberals. In addition, we passed North America's strongest Endangered Species legislation to help our environ- ment, and passed new water legislation to protect our Great Lakes. We haven't been perfect, but I think all of us can see and feel the difference since our government took office. I know we still have more to do and with your support I'm going to continue working hard to keep delivering results for Oakville. I want to keep Ontario moving forward, not back to the Conservative days of deficits and cuts.
