July 5 Naturally Green Pesticide Awareness Program 150 Ways to Play - Live it The Town of Oakville participates in the `Naturally Green' Pesticide Education and Awareness campaign in partnership with Halton Region, area municipalities, Landscape Ontario and the Organic Landscape Alliance. As part of the program, the Town encourages residents with sensitivities to pesticides to sign up for the Town's confidential pesticide registry. The Town supports registrants by sending Naturally Green pesticide awareness information to nearby homes and businesses. This is expected to be the last year for the Pesticide Registry as By-Law #2007-036, a by-law to regulate the use of pesticides within the Town of Oakville, comes into effect January 1, 2008. This by-law and more information on the Registry can be located on the Town's website at www.oakville.ca. Town residents are also encouraged to access the Town's website to see if they live within 50 metres of an area identified as being a "sensitive use area." Sensitive use Everyday! Soil tests are recommended to determine P/K (phospshorous/potassium), pH, and micronutrient needs. Ten Steps to be Naturally Green (Part 2of 2) #6 - #10 6. Help your lawn breathe Soil can get compacted from ordinary use. This restricts air, water, and compost from getting to the plant roots. The most effective method to relieve compaction is core aeration, where small deep plugs of soil are removed (minimum depth 6 cm/ 2 ½ inches), then broken up by raking and left on the surface. Core aerators can be rented. Your lawn's soil is home to many living things. Protect beneficial insects and earthworms by ceasing to use insecticides and fungicides. Most of these organisms help your lawn and may be harmed when pesticides are used. 9. Control pests naturally Prevention is the best approach for managing pests. Try managing weeds by improving the general condition of the lawn, as well as by hand weeding. If you keep your lawn healthy using good maintenance practices, your lawn will be less susceptible to pest damage. 10. Try something different 7. Feed the soil Use organic or slow release nitrogen along with top-dressing and grass-cycling. Available at garden centres, organic fertilizers can include bone and blood Satellite Operations Depot and Patrol Yard. Members of the public are encouraged to attend this information centre and to provide their views and comments for consideration as the study progresses. McCormick Rankin Corporation will undertake this study on behalf of the Town of Oakville. The study is being conducted in accordance with Schedule `C' of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000), which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. Consider alternative ground covers, such as shrubs, vines, and native plants, especially for shaded, dry or difficult areas. Replace grass with paving stones in heavy traffic areas. Experiment with alternative landscapes such as mulch, perennial beds, or rock gardens. NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT & PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #1 North Satellite Operations Depot and Patrol Yard Class Environmental Assessment The Town of Oakville has initiated a study to establish a new North Satellite Operations Depot and Patrol Yard.
