www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 27, 2007 - 15 Tour secret gardens The Oakville Horticultural Society's annual Garden Tour that features everything from a lakeside garden to one on an old car wash site, is sure to inspire. The Secret Gardens of Oakville Garden Tour is a self-guided tour that takes place on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $15 each. The annual garden tour is a garden adventure where it's possible to see what others have done. It may present solutions, new ideas or inspiration along with helpful hints or handy advice. This year's tour will take visitors from established areas to new gardens. They'll visit a lakeside garden to one sharing a ravine, one that was once a car wash site and one on a waterfall along a busy road. There are eight gardens on this year's tour. One belongs to Celia Roberts in northeast Oakville. Roberts has a large garden that backs onto a ravine. A past president of the Oakville Horticultural Society who now heads District Six of the Ontario Horticultural Association, Roberts is also an award-winning floral designer. The Oakville Horticultural Society is promoting three neighbourhood walks in its garden tour and five of the eight gardens featured are north of the QEW and garden owners have labeled unique plants to aid visitors who wish to take notes or expand their knowledge. Master Gardeners from the Halton Region Master Gardeners will be available at selected gardens to answer questions. Members of the Oakville Horticultural Society will also be present at all gardens to welcome visitors and take questions. The Oakville Horticultural Society endeavours to stimulate an interest in gardening by youths in the community, and encourages the beautification of public properties. A major portion of the funds raised is used to support horticultural projects in the community. The society's most visible project in town is the parkette at the corner of Forsythe Street and Rebecca Street -- a garden the society created and maintains. Another project is the Junior's Garden, behind the Town greenhouse on Cornwall Road.
