www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 29, 2007 - 19 Women soccer players eye gold at 2009 World Masters Games T here is a kind of passion that comes with the sport of soccer, and it runs deep into the heart of the Oakville community. But that passion is not only found among the younger set -- it has hit adults as well. Lisa Newman, YMCA of Oakville Supervisor of Health, Fitness and Recreation, has been bitten by the soccer bug herself. She's a quiet lady, but when it comes to soccer you can just feel the excitement in her voice. Lisa is a long-time soccer lover, who has played the game since she was 12. She has brought her passion to life with an over age-35 competitive women's soccer team that she has been training since September 2006 at the YMCA of Oakville. The competitive soccer playing season runs from mid-May to mid-September and the team includes members from ages 3550 who come from Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga and Hamilton. The group has been together for three years, and has even participated in an all-night soccer tournament to raise funds for breast cancer. This particular women's team is not just a mediocre group they are indeed winners. They won a gold medal at the World Master's Games last year in Edmonton and are now training for the 2009 World Masters Games in Australia. One player commented on the benefits of playing with a high- calibre team: "It has been a very rewarding experience for all of the ladies. Competing at the World Masters Games, at an international level, has given the ladies the confidence to pursue other goals in their personal and professional life. We have been able to take our passion for soccer and prove that it is never too late to fulfill you goals and reach for gold." Weekly YMCA training sessions have included a combination of CycleFit, Core Strength and the other tricks of the trade that Lisa has up her sleeve as a seasoned trainer and YMCA fitness expert. When asked how the Y training has contributed to the success of the group, a player said, "The Y has given us a chance to continue our team building exercises, as well as working on our fitness, balance and core. We are very privileged to have a facility and an instructor like Lisa to continue to pursue our goal of a repeat gold in Sydney in 2009." Soccer training is just one more way that the Y has reached into the community to fill a need and help fulfill a passion. Thanks Lisa Newman, for offering your dedication and passion to this team. -- Submitted by the Oakville Y.
