Going undefeated in five games, and posting shutouts in four of them, the Oakville Fusion under-15 boys' soccer team won gold at the recent Whitby Iroquois Cup tournament. Oakville upset the tournament hosts, Whitby-A, 2-0 in the final, as Krystian Bryla and Rodrigo Alvarino scored goals for the Fusion. Earlier in the tournament, the Fusion defeated Whitby-B 5-0, downed Ajax 2-0 and tied St. Catharines Concord 3-3 before blanking Beamsville 2-0 in the semifinal. Gianmarco Castro recorded the four shutouts for Oakville. Also contributing to the win were Jeremy De Sousa, Jason Moreira, Johan Israelian, Jordan North, Colin McKennan, Michael MacArthur, Paul DiCesare, Francesco Stalteri, Alexander Roberts, Stephen Missiuna, Vincent Seidner, David Doughty, Oscar Ribeiro, Justin Novakowski and Kenny Edwards. Although the Canadians put on a good show for the Oakville crowd, they'll be looking to earn a split of the series at Fletcher's Field in Markham Saturday. Still, Buxton-Forman and Simpson's chance to compete for Canada on their home field was a thrill. "It's a great honour to represent Canada and it's good to do it right here at home," Buxton-Forman said. The former Oakville Trafalgar teammates took very different routes to the national team. Buxton-Forman went to Western after graduating from OT and was an Ontario University Athletics all-star after finishing second in the league in scoring last year. Simpson took a year off from school to play in Europe before heading to the University of Victoria. "Will and I have known each other all through school," Buxton-Forman said. "He's progressed a lot and it's great to be teammates again at the highest level." The Crusaders have been very successful in helping players reach that level. No other club had more than two representatives on the Canadian team, while Oakville had three. And there may be even more in the future. "It's great what they're doing with the Cru here," said Simpson, as he signed a ball for a young player.
