Canada RIDE program had a few close calls Five suspensions handed out Halton Regional Police are viewing the results of a Canada Day R.I.D.E. program in Oakville with mixed feelings after a series of license suspensions were handed out. Although none of the 603 drivers stopped proved to be impaired, five had enough alcohol in their systems to warrant 12-hour license suspensions. The Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) program stops drivers briefly so police may determine their level of sobriety. Those who are suspected of drinking are required to take a roadside breath test, which can result in a pass, a fail, or a warning. A pass means the driver has less than 50 mgs of alcohol in 100 mls of blood and is allowed to drive on. A warning means the driver has between 50 and 100 mgs of alcohol in their blood, which is what police say happened in the case of the five drivers given 12hour suspensions. A fail indicates the driver had more than 100 mgs of alcohol in their blood and results in the person being arrested and taken to the police station for the full breathalyzer test. A reading of more than 80 mgs of alcohol in that test can result in criminal charges and an immediate 30-day license suspension, followed by a minimum one-year license suspension upon conviction. The Canada Day R.I.D.E program in Oakville was held at various locations throughout the town for approximately five hours. Police promise frequent spot checks throughout the year in all parts of the Region of Halton in an effort to combat the carnage caused by impaired drivers.
