Reach Out Centre For Kids (ROCK), formerly known as Halton Child and Youth Services, was recently the beneficiary of a $20,000 donation from RBC, and another $7,500 from CHML Radio and that's not all. On top of that, ROCK is the cause the Social Community Charities of Oakville a coalition of five major local charities has decided to pool its resources together to support. "We decided that by working together, we could make a real difference," Bert Poirier of the SCCO told supporters gathered recently at ROCK's first annual Lighting the Way Event in Oakville. Porier said the group of charities, which is made up of the Kiwanis, Kinsmen, Lions, Civitan and Optimist Clubs of Oakville, decided to support ROCK after looking at a variety of causes to focus on. These were some of the facts supporters heard at ROCK's Lighting the Way Event, held recently at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre. On hand were many of ROCK's supporters, including CIBC, IKEA and RBC representatives. RBC Financial Group handed over a cheque for $20,000 to the applause of the nearly 100 people present. "To put a human face on that research, our young people who are struggling with mental health issues need someone to invest in them, someone to listen, someone to provide hope, someone to give them a hand up out of the darkness when they need it," Porier said. Cancer Society needs summer office volunteers The Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit is desperately looking for summer office volunteers. Summer office volunteers are needed to help with general office work during July and August. Tasks include answering the phones, filing, preparing mailings, data entry and other light duties as needed. Volunteers in this position must have previous experience in an office setting. Volunteer shifts are available in the morning and afternoon, Monday through Friday. The Oakville Unit has an office volunteer team that helps during the fall, winter and spring months. A large majority of the unit's office volunteers will be away during the summer months.
