42 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 13, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Matos, Hinchcliffe form solid one-two punch for Sierra Sierra Continued from page 40 Fortunately, Sierra Sierra was taking the opposite approach, looking to add a second car to its team. Hinchcliffe, who finished 10th in the point standings last year and was fourth among returning drivers, was a perfect fit. Hinchcliffe joined Matos and, although they butted heads this weekend (Hinchcliffe accused his teammate of blocking him during qualifying), they have been a formidable duo, standing one- two in the points race for most of the season until Sunday. Like most Atlantic drivers, Hinchcliffe is hoping to land a Champ Car ride. While he said staying with Forsyth would have been an advantage because they also operate a Champ Car team, he said strong results can make up for any disadvantage. "I think we've seen with Graham (Rahal) and Simon (Pagenaud) that teams are realizing guys in the Atlantic can run at the front (in Champ Car) and that there are quality drivers. If you finish in the top three, you're going to have some opportunities," he said. For now, Hinchcliffe will focus on his opportunities to win races, beginning with two races in Edmonton next weekend. Check Out Our FIM Umbrellas Majors 14th in SCCA racing debut James Hinchcliffe wasn't the only Oakville racer tearing up the track Sunday at the Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto. Nick Majors, driving a Dodge Viper, finished 14th in his debut in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT series. Majors qualified 19th in the 21-car field, but worked his way through the field despite the wet track conditions. He will drive again for the Woodhouse Performance team in the eighth race in the series at Mosport in August. "I am familiar with the car and the series now after the race here in Toronto, so I think Mosport will turn out excellent," Majors said. "We didn't have much track time at all here in Toronto before the race -- I think I made less than 20 laps total in practice -- so being able to have more of that in Mosport will be great. Toronto was an excellent experience and a great opportunity and I enjoyed it immensely." The Toronto race will be broadcast on SPEED channel tomorrow at noon. -- Herb Garbutt Local heavyweight Silva victorious at Taekwon-Do friendship tournament Morningstar Taekwon-Do was the host of the recent International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) Challenge, a bi-annual friendship tournament that draws competitors from Taekwon-Do schools from across Canada and the United States. This year's event drew 250 athletes and featured a higher level of competition than the ITF Challenge typically has, according to Morningstar Taekwon-Do head instructor Mike Morningstar. Morningstar, a fifth-degree with the ITF, attributed the increase in competition to the fact that he reduced the number of divisions, making for interesting matchups. That was the case in the tournament final, when Morningstar Taekwon-Do heavyweight competitor Mark Silva met a Philadelphia lightweight opponent. Silva won a close match to claim gold and cap off a successful weekend, having already placed second in patterns at the tournament and passing his fourth-degree test the day before the competition. Obtaining the fourth-degree credentials was the culmination of 17 years of training for Silva, whose test included fundamental exercises, patterns, self-defense, breaking and sparring. The sparring test was particularly grueling as Silva had to defend himself in numerous oneon-one, two-on-one and even threeon-one matches against other Morningstar Taekwon-Do black belt members.
