www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 18, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Police praised for helping students Continued from page 6 She has not witnessed someone fall to the ground groaning, his bloodstained shirt smearing the floor. She has not witnessed an attack in the safe confines of the school where it might just be possible that the alleged assailant would turn on others or have another more deadly weapon in their backpack. To suggest, even through a couple of interviews, that this incident was no big deal plays into the hands of others who see this as just part of our society in Oakville today. To suggest this had no impact on others is, I believe, the lack of follow up by the reporter. Nowhere does it talk about the children who were traumatized by the event. Those who spent the afternoon weeping openly. Those who were afraid to go to school the next day knowing the alleged assailant was out on bail. Those who spent the next several nights waking up with flashbacks of the repeated stabbing motion to the back of the victim as they watched in stunned silence. Maybe even the victim himself? The recent scrawling in a washroom at the same school and the massive press it garnered compared to the almost mundane reaction to an actual incident is disturbing. An innocent student was stabbed repeatedly in the supposedly safe confines of his school. Several students watched in horror as they saw their classmate stumble and then whisked away by paramedics not knowing if he would die. Does anyone really believe this was no big deal? This ideal can only be the result of an ever-growing sick mentality that somehow supports the concept that this is just the way things are today. I'm sorry, but I don't give in to that notion. One word of thanks and that goes out to the police who were quick to identify the students who had been traumatized and called their parents. The constables involved in the subsequent interviews and follow-up showed a wonderful com- passion and understanding of the gravity of the event. Other than the customary letter from the school, I have yet to hear anything from anyone personally about the event or inquiring about the well being of our children. It's a sad day for Oakville.
