Meanwhile, Halton has seen a 32 per cent increase in its population of babies, or 1,300-plus. The other three local municipalities saw jumps in their baby and children statistics as well. They are as follows: · Halton Hills -- seven per cent increase in babies, from 605 in 2001 to 645 in 2006 and a five per cent increase in newborn to six-year-olds, up slightly from 4,945 in 2001 to 5,215 last year. · Burlington -- 16 per cent increase in babies, going from 1,605 in 2001 to 1,860 in 2006 and a three per cent increase in newborn to six-year-olds, up slightly from 12,730 in 2001 to 13,105 last year. · Oakville -- 17 per cent more babies, increasing from 1,625 in 2001 to 1,905 in 2006 and a 10 per cent jump amongst those newborn to six, going up from 13,325 in 2001 to 14,705 in 2006. The rapid growth is putting pressure on children's services in the community. Recent research conducted by Our Kids Network found that 21 per cent of parents with young children can't get services like daycare in their communities due to long waiting lists. The research also showed that 19 per cent of parents have problems accessing early-learning supports for their children and 21 per cent of young families are finding it difficult to gain access to a doctor. "The supply hasn't caught up to the demand yet for some programs and services because funding hasn't caught up," noted Lothian. The Our Kids Network is a group of community partners working to find new ways to bring needed services to children and families.
