www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 3, 2007 - 19 Local groups benefit from Trillium grants Several Oakville groups are among 30 in Halton and Peel that will receive a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Ontario Minister of Culture Caroline Di Cocco announced Wednesday the OTF will hand over more than $2.6 million in community grants to the 30 not-for-profit organizations in Halton-Peel. "For 25 years the Ontario Trillium Foundation has strengthened communities by supporting the remarkable work of Ontario's volunteer organizations," said Di Cocco. "OTF funding has enabled hundreds of new and other groups to grow stronger and has helped ensure that the diverse interests and needs of local residents are served in their communities." Among the Oakville-based groups receiving cash are: the Kinsmen Club of Oakville ($15,000 over one year); the Oakville Arts Council ($52,000 over three years); the Ontario Genealogical Society, Halton-Peel Branch c/o Ontario Genealogical Society ($16,600 over six months); and, PARDners: Partners for Accessible Recreational Docking c/o CharterAbility Cruising for the Disabled Inc. ($99,000 over one year). The Kinsmen's $15,000 is to purchase a barbecue and other concession equipment for use at outdoor festivals, which will help improve the capacity of the club to raise funds for local charities. The arts council will get $52,000 to develop and distribute a pocket Guide for the Arts in Oakville, a publication that will help promote awareness and encourage participation in arts and cultural activities in the community. The Ontario Genealogical Society, Halton-Peel Branch c/o Ontario Genealogical Society will receive $16,600 to catalogue the library collection of the Halton-Peel Genealogical Society. This exercise will make information more accessible and encourage the public to learn more about their community and family history. PARDners: Partners for Accessible Recreational Docking c/o CharterAbility Cruising for the Disabled Inc. will use its $99,000 grant to create an accessible docking facility and waterside park in Oakville. This adaptive and seniorfriendly area will promote water-sport and recreational activities for community members of all abilities. Ontario's spring budget boosted OTF's funding to $105 million from $100 million as the first phase of a 20 per cent annual increase. Grants recently announced are part of that new funding. "These new grants are a wonderful example of how OTF, by working in partnership with local organizations, makes our community a better place to live for the benefit of us all," said Lindsay Williams, Grant Review Team Chair. "By assisting Ontario communities in this manner, OTF creates opportunities for economic growth, participation in sport and cultural activities, a healthier environment and the engagement of youth, seniors and new Canadians." In addition to community grants, Minister Di Cocco also announced more than $6.5 million in 36 grants from OTF's Province-Wide program. This funding is awarded to umbrella organizations that help member groups build their capacity. The Framework Foundation will receive $198,000 over three years to hold a series of Timeraiser events across Ontario. These events aim to encourage young people in their 20s and 30s to volunteer with not-for-profit organizations and charities. OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario.
