www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 8, 2007 - 17 CFUW-Oakville announces 2007 scholarship winners Each year, CFUW - Oakville presents awards in the following four categories to provide financial assistance to Oakville women graduating from publicly funded schools who intend to pursue studies at post secondary institutions: university entrance, community service, performing arts, and mature student. The CFUW - Oakville raises funds through member donations and bequests and ticketed events that are open to the public. In recent years, the Club has hosted luncheons with speakers who have included author and homemaker, Rose Reisman and TVO's Paula Todd. Plans for the 2007-2008 fundraising events are in progress and will be announced shortly. The recipients of the 2007 University Entrance Scholarships must have an A average. The recipients include: · Carolyn Keitzke, Mildred Allworth Award -- Keitzke is a graduate of Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School who is continuing her studies in Kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton. She was a school prefect and an executive of the school's Justice and Peace Committee. Keitzke served for three years on the board of the Oakville Youth Advisory Committee, two years as vicechair and one year as chair. Her extracurricular activities include intensive involvement with field hockey, tennis, Royal Conservatory piano, dance and martial arts. She also volunteers at the Hospital for Sick Children and Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. · Lindsay Trnkus, Beverley Teasdale Award -- Trnkus is a graduate of Abbey Park High School who intends to continue her studies in Social Sciences at the University of Western Ontario in London and is hoping to continue into Law. She was a member of the school's Debating Team, which became Halton champions. Trnkus was part of Abbey Park TV, which produced year-end videos and she helped organize the school's Take 48 Film Festival. She managed and directed two school plays and was a fashion show fundraiser. Trnkus also helped organize the 30-hour famine experience at the school to support World Vision. · Eryl McCaffrey, University Entrance Award -- McCaffrey is a graduate of Thomas A Blakelock High School who intends to study Journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa. She was an executive member of the Mississauga and Oakville Leadership Club, which supports grade 10 students to continue their academic studies, and was also a student tutor. McCaffrey received the Grade 11 University English award. For two years, she assisted in organizing the Terry Fox Run. She also played the lead in the high school musical. · Sarah Schuman Johns, University Entrance Award -- she is a graduate of Iroquois Ridge High School who intends to take Concurrent Education at Brock University in St. Catharines. She has travelled to Africa to participate in an initiative to immunize children against polio, sponsored by the Oakville Rotary Club and the World Health Organization (WHO). As a member of the Girl Guides, Sarah has assisted in an ongoing project to provide support to the women at a local shelter. As a volunteer, she has worked at the food bank, for the Halloween for Hunger Campaign (part of Fare Share) and as a leader at the Wyoka Guide Camp and Camp Winston (for those with autism). · Rebecca Basciano, University Entrance Award -- Basciano is a graduate of Oakville Trafalgar High School (French immersion program) who will study English Literature at the University of Western Ontario in London. She was a member of the school Wellness Council. Basciano received a government youth grant for young entrepreneurs and opened a summer bookstore. Basciano is studying Royal Conservatory piano (Grade 10), teaches piano, and plays the clarinet in the school band. · Amy Donaldson, University Entrance Award -- Donaldson is a graduate of Iroquois Ridge High School who is continuing her studies in Business (Human Resources) at the University of Guelph. She was an executive member of the Student Council and participated on a student panel at the annual Oakville Mayor's Breakfast. Donaldson organized the school's Clean-up Day as part of Earth Week, and is a member of the Environmental Club. She was also a team member of the Halton championship basketball and track teams. Donaldson helped organize the 30hour famine experience at the school to support World Vision and is a volunteer leader at two summer camps. The recipients of the 2007 Community Service Awards must demonstrate unpaid and non-credit service to the community and have an A or B average. The recipients include: · Kimberley MacMaster, Jean Malcolm Smith Award -- MacMaster is a graduate of Oakville Trafalgar High School who is continuing her studies in Biometrics at the University of Waterloo. She was a co-founder and coordinator of Oakville Teenagers in Action, which supported the construction of schools in Africa through fundraising and corporate sponsorship.
