www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 18, 2007 - 7 Important to match pets with right owner Continued from page 3 cranny in Ontario," she says to rescue dogs, and isn't compensated for gas. "Without question, she's one of the most selfless people I've ever met," said Carrie Olver, who recently received nine-month old Kodi through the LRRO, and met Znidarec in the process. Kodi was just four months old when Znidarec rescued him from a family who decided they didn't want him anymore. A host on the Weather Channel, Olver was looking for a companion for her other dog, and found out about the LRRO on the Internet. "Joan organized everything the meeting, getting him fixed, giving him his shots. Everything." After the owner pays a $300 fee, Znidarec and the LRRO take care of all the shots, spaying, neutering, microchips and more. She even calls the new owner every few days to see how everything is going with their new pet. Making sure the owner is suitable is a process Znidarec is very careful about. She'll meet with the prospective owner and literally screen them and visit their home to decide whether the dog is a good fit for the family and its lifestyle. "It's like dating," she says, "not every dog is for every person." The reason she's so careful about the homes these dogs enter is because she wants the fit to be a match for good. Znidarec admits it's hard not to take the dogs into her own home. "There's a lot of dogs that I have fallen madly in love with," she said, smiling. "I fall in love all the time." She has a soft spot for "the seniors" the older dogs. "It's sad because people often overlook the seniors, and they have the most to give." The LRRO currently has nine dogs up for adoption, including a nine-year-old chocolate lab named Daphne and a 10-year-old male black lab named Riley. Znidarec says they're always looking for foster homes, which are temporary homes for the dogs until an owner is found. Those interested should contact Joan Znidarec through the LRRO.
