www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 24, 2007 - 7 Pride Week goes on without picnic The Halton Organization for Pride and Education (HOPE) has put together a line-up of pride events for the week of Sept. 3 9. The annual picnic has been delayed because of the increase in requests for anti-homophobia education HOPE received in its first year as a full-time social provider. "We still wanted to give the community something in recognition of the 8th Annual Halton Pride week," said executive director of HOPE Marcus Logan. "We were fortunate to find some volunteers from the LGBTQ communities who really wanted to pull something together. They had to make a very difficult decision in putting the annual picnic on hiatus until 2008. The planning committee really wanted to take the time and energy the picnic and the LGBTQ communities deserve." This year's events include raising the pride flag, celebrating pride at the theatre and a pride brunch. HOPE has made proclamation and requests to fly the rainbow Pride Flag for Halton Pride week, from Sept 3 9. The flag will be flying over the towns of Milton and Oakville, the city of Burlington and at Regional Headquarters on Bronte for the entire week. The West End Studio Theatre of Oakville in association with the Halton Organization for Pride and Education and PFLAG Halton will present the 10th anniversary of the funny theatrical production, Norman, Is that You? at the Oakville Center for the Performing Arts Sept. 6-15 at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 is Halton Pride Day, and HOPE has a block of tickets for this performance at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy St., in celebration of Halton Pride week. Tickets cost $25 each and $20 for students and youth under 18. Those who can't make the Halton Pride Day performance on Sept. 8 can still support Pride by buying tickets through HOPE for one of the other dates. Portions of the tickets sales will support the 9th Annual Halton Pride events. The HOPE Community Pride Brunch for the LGBTQ communities, its allies, families and friends will be held Sunday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. at Sharkey's World Café, 220 North Service Rd. "Since it's our first brunch together, it will be a casual get together for the LGBTQ communities, allies, families and friends to celebrate together," said HOPE's community liason, Dennis. "This could be the beginning of our social programming initiatives if enough people are interested in getting together on a regular basis." People are asked to call HOPE at 905-632-4551 to reserve their tickets for the play on Sept. 8 and to indicate their attendance for the brunch. The Halton Pride Planning committee is still looking for other volunteers to assist in planning and orchestrating the 9th Annual Halton Pride Picnic in June 2008, as well as to expand the event into other venues.
