www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 25, 2007 - 9 Summer time in Oakville Continued from page 6 depict Oakville, this is the one, beckoning all sailors to come home safely. Later, I park my car on Robinson Street, no easy feat on some days since finding parking in downtown Oakville can be a little bit of a frustrating quest, and walk to the shops on Lakeshore Road East. My favourite stops are all food related and they take me back to a less complicated time. This morning, I first go to the Old-Fashioned Butcher Shop, and buy some hamburger patties. I need buns, and there is no place better than Cobs Bakery Shop just down the way. I also indulge in some decadent cravings by allowing myself a chocolate croissant. It smells so good in Cobs! When I pay the young lady, and pull out my change purse, I have a flashback of my grandmother also buying the day's meal, early in the morning, in the piazza of my ancestral Italian village. There is very little difference, I think, here as I take my fresh buns and meat and walk past the Town Square. People gather here to drink their coffee (there is, after all, a coffee shop on almost corner of the downtown core) and take their time to chat to acquaintances before they go on about their business. It is precisely these simple things about small town living that I tend to forget in the technologically-driven 21st century we live in. The sun is hot and shines brilliantly on this August day. I feel anxiety pangs about going back to work because I will be returning to the minutiae of school work and the fast-paced lifestyle of a suburban commuter. I live in the River Oaks area, so my jaunts down to the lake will be less frequent once the autumn months begin. I will miss the blue water and the white sails moving against the endless horizon. The lighthouse, however, will still beckon, with its red light flashing. -- Lililian DiRisio is an Oakville resident and former reporter for The Oakville Beaver.
