Nicholson's six gold helps Burloak to national crown Having an Olympic champion on your side definitely helps, but the Burloak Canoe Club's secret weapon may be Mallorie Nicholson. Nicholson matched the six gold medals won by teammate and world champion Adam van Koeverden at the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak championships in Ottawa on the weekend. Not that Nicholson should still be that much of a secret, now that she's won a dozen gold medals over the past two years at nationals. Nicholson swept the junior women's C-1 200-metre, 500m and 1,000m events, and added victories in the senior women's C-1 200m and 500m. She also teamed up with Chandra Reid to take the C-2 500m title. Nicholson and Reid then earned silver medals in the senior women's C-2 1,000m and as members of the open women's C-4 200m. Despite cutting back on her training schedule, Nicholson -- a firstyear university student -- bettered the times she posted last year in setting records in the junior and senior 200m events. With performances like that, it's no wonder Burloak ran away with the national title, netting 769 points -- nearly 300 more than second-place Mississauga. It came as no surprise that van Koeverden won the K-1 500m and 1,000m, events he's dominated on the world stage. He also won the K-2 1,000m, along with Chris Pellini, who collected four golds of his own. Pellini and van Koeverden helped Burloak take the K-4 1,000m, with Brady Reardon and Christopher Mehak, and the K-2 200m, in which Adam Oldershaw took Mehak's spot. His sixth win came as part of Burloak's C-15 1,000m crew. Mark Oldershaw, who made the finals at the recent world championships, chalked up five wins, taking the C1 500m and 1,000m. He also won the C-2 200m with Aaron Rublee and the C-4 1000m with Jamie Andison, Scott Fisher and Mark Klevinas, and was a member of the C-15 crew. Reardon, who took first in the junior men's K-1 500m, returned from Ottawa with four gold medals. Other multiple gold medalists were Christopher Mehak, Aaron Rublee (three each), Adam Oldershaw, Jamie Andison, Scott Fisher, Mark Klevinas, Cory Rublee, Hunter George, Geoff Clarke, Lizzy Bates, Delaire Nicholson and Natalie Thomson (two apiece).
