Funding to senior's care, women's groups, faith-based schools and post secondary education were just some of the queries on the minds of the more than 50 people in attendance, many who belong to the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), which hosted the event. The Green Party's Marion Schaffer also counts herself a member, and was joined in the breakfast debate at Knight's of Columbus Hall by the NDP's Tony Crawford, Rick Byers of the Progressive Conservatives and the Liberals' Kevin Flynn, who is seeking re-election. While they all agree on the need for funding in various areas including schooling and health care, the politicians were divided on faith-based funded schooling, which PC leader John Tory is pushing for. It's something Byers, too, supports. "Parents who send their children to Christian or Jewish or other schools tell me, `we do the same thing as the Catholic schools, but they get funding and we don't' and they're right," said Byers, an investment banker. The PC candidate noted faithbased schools have no academic standards compared to the public or catholic school systems, "a system that is neither fair nor right." The Green Party, Schaffer said, would get rid of the Catholic School system and align schools in a different way. "We're very much in favour of having one system: the public system. "How do you begin to be tolerant of others if you've never met a person who thinks differently from you?" she asked. A retired teacher and minister, Schaffer added religion-based schools aren't necessary because "the best faith teachers are mom and dad." Flynn said the McGuinty Liberals were "just starting to turn the public education system around" with smaller class sizes and higher graduation rates, and now isn't the time for change. The MPP accused Tory of "injecting the topic of religion into our education system" at election time because he "isn't doing well politically." The answer, Flynn says, is to "continue investing in our education system" to carry on with the progress. The NDP, Crawford says, plans to review the funding formula on education and will continue to plug money into schooling. Crawford, an author, added his party will also "guarantee immedi- ate funding for students at risk and who are in need," which is something he says past governments have overlooked. Three of the four local candidates also said they will vote in favour of Mixed Member Proportional voting on Oct. 10. The electoral reform would see voters cast a ballot for both a local candidate and a political party. The members would be elected from single member electoral districts and from party lists. Schaffer said she'll be voting yes because "more people will be given a voice" if the MMP system passes. "Democracy is about government of the people, by the people, for the people," she said. "You've got to get in there and have your voice be heard, and this will happen when we vote yes." Flynn said the reform has earned his support because a group of citizens came to the decision that it was necessary. "One hundred and three of my peers have gone out in the community, have examined other options around the world and came back with a decision," he said. "With such a majority, there's got to be something to it, so I'm going to support it." Crawford, too, said the NDP is supporting the electoral reform, and noted the party is encouraging female candidates across the country. Byers, however, will be voting `no' on Oct. 10. His main problem with the system is that the 39 members of parliament are selected from party lists, and "would not make proper representation to the community."
