"Right from day one we were in the top 10 in Toronto radio," he said. The station's offices and studios are at the Broadcast Centre at 284 Church St., at Trafalgar Road. The station broadcasts over a 50,000-watt clear multi-directional frequency with a coverage area that is one of the largest in North America, extending across southern Ontario from Windsor to Kingston, north to Parry Sound and deep into the United States reaching New York City, Washington, DC, and Chicago. The station has a more than a half million listeners in this area. The station is currently owned by AM 740 Prime Time Radio, Caine explained, a partnership consisting of the Caine Family, Ken Harrigan (a former president of Ford of Canada), George Patton, Terry Patterson and Peter Gilgan, of Mattamy Homes. It operates separately from Whiteoaks Communications Group Ltd. the Caine Family which owns 100 per cent of Trafalgar Broadcasting Ltd., the licensee for both CJOY 1250 and CJMR 1320. The three radio stations employ about 50 people. At this point, Caine does not know how many of his staff, if any, will move with the station. "We're still in the business," said Caine, emphasizing that the other two stations are not part of the deal. "I'm not part of the deal," he added, indicating he will not be involved with AM 740 after anticipated approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunication Commission (CRTC), the federal broadcast regular. Caine expects the application to be filed within the next month for approval in about six months. Znaimer plans to move the station into his Classical 96 building in Toronto, but operate as a separate entity. Znaimer has actively pursued buying AM 740 for eight months, "and it became more intense these past couple of months," said Caine. "He approached me. Before that, Moses and I just socialized." Caine said he agreed to the sale when Znaimer committed to "having the same plans, goals and dreams for the station that I have. He was very persistent. But, the more I got to know him the more I realized his goals and dreams were the same as mine. I recognized the synergies of joining the two stations and he wasn't interested in selling to me!" Caine said the sale of AM 740 was "bittersweet and emotional for me. It's my baby. I've assembled a great team, all of whom believe in my dream too. The sale was a very difficult one for me but I based my decision on what's in the best interest of the station and of the audience and I feel the sale will benefit both companies. I was concerned for my employees and the audience and have received assurances that both would remain intact." Caine believes Znaimer can take the station further. "He's interested in continuity and building up the adult standards format. "AM 740 was my baby and babies grow up to fly on their own or fly under someone else's tutelage," Caine said. "I'm so proud of everyone's accomplishments and achievements at AM 740. I'm so proud of them, but there comes a time in life. . . I'm a reluctant vendor, we had a lot of dreams and goals and I wasn't interested in selling the station at all, but the realities were otherwise. We're an independent in Canada's most competitive market with convergence happening all around us and at some point you say, `what's best for the customer.' I'm selling to another private broadcaster and it's an acceptable deal, a win-win." AM 740 began life as CHWO 1250, launched by Howard Caine on Nov. 17, 1956, a 1,000-watt AM station with a nostalgia format. Its studio was located in downtown Oakville not far from the present Broadcast Centre at Church Street and Trafalgar Road. In 1966 the station was relocated to 490 Wyecroft Rd. Howard appointed his wife Jean to the company board of directors and named her station manager in 1967. Later that year, Howard died of cancer and son Michael joined his family business. Today his son Matt Caine is production manager. In 1970, CHWO boosted its power to 10,000 watts daytime and 5,000 watts nighttime. CJMR, then broadcasting daytime only at 1190 AM to serve Mississauga, was launched in 1974. In late 1989 or early 1990, the radio studio moved back into downtown Oakville into its present site, the Broadcast Centre at 284 Church St. CHWO increased power, for a second time, to 10,000 watts. On June 16, 2000, a new venture known as AM 740 Prime Time Radio was granted the 740 AM frequency, a 50,000 watt clear channel no longer needed by the CBC. This paved the way for not only the launch of relaunch of CHWO as AM 740 but also of CJYE JOY 1250, a Christian music station, on Feb. 5, 2001. CJMR became a full time multicultural station having switched to the 24-hour 1320 frequency when it became available. CHWO celebrated its 50th anniversary on Nov. 17, 2006 by launching internet streaming via its website, www.am740.ca. 905.822.1591 · www.jazkogroup.com · info@jazkogroup.com *Open to the Public Thursday Friday Saturday · 10am to 6pm Reading | Writing | Math | Spelling | Grammar | French | Study Skills Little Readers Registrtion NOW OPEN INSIDE EVERY CHILD IS A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT.
