So, in the absence of government money kicking in, heels kick up and the lights go off, not in frustration or cost cutting, but as part of a black-tie fundraising gala whose proceeds will pay the tab. Organizers of the 16th annual OTMH Candlelight Ball, slated for Saturday, Nov. 3, have set their fundraising goal starward, expecting to net a record $500,000 in one night. Committee chair Kathy Mueller even expects to surpass this goal. Since the Candlelight Ball began in 1992 more than $2.3 million has been raised for the local hospital that's now part of Halton Healthcare Services (HHS). There's room for 600 guests at the Burlington Convention Centre to enjoy a cocktail reception, with martini and oyster bars, and then wine, dine, dance and bid on a bevy of interesting items. Co-sponsors of the event are Paul and Brenda Barrington and Ron Southwick of Barrington's Fine Outerwear, and Murray and Gail Farncombe of Murron's Cabintree. Appleby College's Don Stewart is the evening's auctioneer. A 42-inch plasma screen television, set of DVDs and family movie pass to the cinema are also being raffled off. Currently, 12,000 medical procedures are provided at OTMH and this number will increase as the population ages and growth is projected to jump from 166,000 residents to 180,400 by 2011. As a result, there are more than 80 pieces of equipment urgently needed in several departments of OTMH that are not funded by the government. Some of these include: · A digital video cystoscope, which gives urologists better images during bladder exams, costs $49,641. · BrainLab instruments that make sinus procedures highly accurate and that also come with a $39,135 price tag. · New myringotomy trays filled with instruments needed to examine the ear and insert ear tubes cost $2,632. · A Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy set used for minimally invasive surgery, to view the inside of the abdomen, and to remove the gallbladder, which costs $17,337.
