22 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 19, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Start saving now for your child's education after high school Most parents want to put money aside for their children's education, but for families where just making ends meet is a challenge, it can seem hard to get started early. Getting started now can be as easy as calling 1 800-O Canada (1 800 622-6232) today. The federal government helps modest-income families get grants of $500 and more towards saving for their children's education after high school. The Canada Learning Bond is a boost from the government to help families of modest income get started early on planning and saving for their children's future. This $500 grant is for children born after December 31, 2003, in families that receive the National Child Benefit Supplement (commonly known as the "baby bonus" or "family allowance"). Here's how it works: To get the Canada Learning Bond for your child, simply open a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), available at most financial institutions. The federal government will then make a payment of $500 directly into your child's RESP. The federal government will then deposit $25 directly into your child's RESP account to help with the cost of opening the plan. When your child is ready to begin education after high school, the money can be used to help pay for educational expenses at a trade school, college, university, CEGEP, or an apprenticeship program. It's that simple! You could also receive an extra $100 a year for up to 15 years, as long as your family continues to qualify. Altogether, this can add up to as much as $2,000 in savings towards your child's future! Another great thing about the Canada Learning Bond is that you don't have to put any of your own money in the RESP to get it. But if you do, the federal government will add up to 40 cents more for every dollar on the first $500 that you save each year. Any amount you save will make a difference to your child's future. Starting early gives your savings time to earn interest and grow even more. Give your child the gift of an education and get started today.
