www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 26, 2007 - 13 Cultural planning presentation As part of the Town's cultural planning process, members of the public are invited to hear urban and cultural strategy specialists Glen Murray and Dr. Greg Baeker speak about the future of Canadian cities and the role that creativity and culture are playing in driving economic development and wealth creation. The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Town Hall and follows a commitment by the Town of Oakville earlier this year to develop its own Cultural Master Plan. Murray, former Winnipeg Mayor and urban strategist, and Baeker, one of Canada's leading experts in integrated cultural strategies for cities, will introduce the cultural planning process. "We are pleased to have Mr. Murray and Dr. Baeker assist us in this important process," said Mayor Rob Burton. "We want to ensure that when Oakville's Cultural Master Plan is complete, it will encourage economic growth and reinforce our strong sense of community. These specialists have been retained to help us do just that." Murray and Baeker will describe successful cultural plans and will speak about one of their recent projects, which has been cited by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Renewal as a best practice under the province's Places to Grow strategy. The project is an Integrated District Strategy for the York District in Guelph that connects land use, economic and cultural planning. Members of the public interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Claire Loughheed, Manager of Culture and Heritage Services, at cloughheed@oakville.ca or 905845-6601, ext. 3007.
