16 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 26, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Salvation Army's Christmas wish is for toy store location The Oakville Salvation Army is asking for the community's help in finding office space for its annual toys for tots drive to help give hundreds of less fortunate children a happy holiday season. In recent years the charity organization has used donated space to construct a kind of store at which those in need can come and choose a donated holiday gift for their children. "The purpose of this Christmas store is to make people feel like they're getting a hand up and not a handout," said Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army spokesperson. "We want to make people feel like they're in a shopping mall shopping for their children. This way they get to choose something their kids will like, instead of us just showing up at their house with a Christmas hamper and wrapped toys." As many of the people who register for the toys for tots program are disempowered and feel they have no control over their own lives, Gardner says, it's important to give them some kind of choice, even if it is only in what gifts their children get for the Christmas. Despite Oakville's affluent appearance, the need for this program is great, with 1,380 children taking advantage of the Oakville Salvation Army's services last year. "People could require this service because of any kind of circumstance, which could range from unemployment to an unforeseen crisis like someone who's been in a tragic house fire and they've lost everything," said Gardner. "They still need to have a Christmas." Last year the Oakville Salvation Army was able to secure 4,400 square feet for their Christmas Store thanks to the Cross Avenue Dollar Store, however, this year a similar space donation has yet to emerge. "We've been calling places, but people don't always call back because they're busy as well," said Gardner. "We're looking at getting even a warehouse. Somewhere that's on a bus route, which is most important because most of the families we deal with are, sometimes not working or on assistance and they take buses everywhere they go." Gardner is hoping someone will donate this type of space so the Oakville Salvation Army can use it from Dec. 1, to Dec. 22. The Christmas store is scheduled to open for 14 days beginning around Dec. 11.
