Blakelock High School, and a member of Oakville's Horizon Taekwon-Do, is a world champion. In fact, a number of members of Oakville's Horizon Taekwon-Do were winning competitors at the ICTF World Championships that were held last weekend in Edmonton, Alberta. Sixteen members of Horizon, under the direction of Louis Sanchez, flew to Edmonton with hope of taking home a basket of medals. This was an ambitious expectation, considering they would be facing tough competition from more than 700 other keen competitors from China, the USA, and other parts of Canada. Each one of the competitors at the championship had the same expectations. The trip to the competition was costly and the team participated in a variety of fundraising activities in order to raise the competition fees. The individual competitors covered the air and hotel costs. The event was over three days and after the final competitive minute the Horizon Team expectation of glory proved to be realistic. The team returned to Oakville with 24 medals. Horizon Taekwon-Do is no stranger to the glory of the sport, as they have won many awards and championships at every level from local to international. The club, located on Speers at Fourth Line, has provided Oakville youth with a range of physical and mental discipline activities for some time. Jesse has been a student of taekwon-do since the age of seven, and has trained with Louis Sanchez, a fifth dan black belt, for nine years. Jesse is currently the holder of a second dan black belt. All of the years of training and discipline under Louis Sanchez must have paid off because Jesse won two gold medals in the heavyweight second degree black belt competition. This achievement shows that Jesse has the necessary perseverance and skills necessary to succeed as a worldclass athlete. Jesse agrees that this achievement has come with a price; he has had to focus all of his energy into this sport and has little time for other hobbies and activities. An interest in the sport was sparked because Jesse wanted a sport that provided his desire for individual competitive challenge. Taekwon-do met this requirement, as well as providing a range of other guidelines such as discipline, fitness, and speed. The sport has enhanced his confidence, and he really does enjoy it. As a world champion in his class, Jesse hopes that his success, and that of Horizon, will inspire other students to consider the sport.
