42 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 26, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville to host major Taekwon-Do competition The Canadian Taekwon-Do Federation International has selected Oakville to host its 2008 Eastern Canadian Championships. The event, which will be organized by Morningstar Taekwon-Do head instructor Mike Morningstar, will draw competitors from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ontario. Since this is also a selection year for Team Canada, the top two finishers in senior black belt competition and the top three finishers in junior black belt competition will qualify for the national championships. There, they will fight for the right to represent Canada at the 2009 world championships in Argentina. The Eastern Canadian Championships will be contested March 8 at Sheridan College. All proceeds from the championships will go towards the Taekwon-Do Academy of Ontario, a non-profit organization that governs all International Taekwon-Do Federation schools in Ontario, as well as funding Ontario athletes and instructors for future championships and seminars. MHRC one of top ski clubs Milton Heights Racing Club, whose membership features a large number of Oakville residents, recently received an honourable mention in Ski Racing Canada magazine's "Best Ski Club in Canada" competition. Operating out of the Glen Eden Ski Centre, the MHRC is almost entirely volunteer-driven and focuses on a wide range of programs and instruction for recreational and competitive skiers. RANGERS ROLL: The Oakville atom AA Rangers won all five of their games to claim gold at the recent Humberview Huskies AA/AAA Invitational Tournament, clinching the title with a 1-0 win over Newmarket. Atom AA Rangers golden in Humberview Stellar team defensive play and a breakaway goal by Sean Kohler enabled the Oakville atom AA Rangers to defeat Newmarket 1-0 in the championship game of the recent Humberview Huskies AA/AAA Invitational Tournament. The win over Newmarket concluded a 5-0 tournament showing for the Rangers, who also defeated Barrie 2-1, Mississauga 2-1, Rideau St. Lawrence 3-0 and London 3-2. Oakville's Spencer Douglas was named the most valuable player of the tournament, scoring two goals during the competition and also playing well defensively. Other members of the team are Bradley Bezemer, Ben Blacker, Nicholas Serniuk, Adam Goraieb, Scott Abrams, Anthony Baxter, Drew Doherty, Ben Bernier, Jack Jeffers, Tim Arnold, Michael Choma, Kyle Hallman, Liam Risi, Matthew Kim and Luke De Rango. Nick Serniuk, Harold Bezemer, Bob Bernier and Mike Choma coach the Rangers. Andrew Salmon, Matt Bekar, Conrad Bach and the Mustangs defeated Brock 2-1 in the third and decisive game of the final series. Salmon was named MVP in the clinching game, making a key defensive play and also driving in the game-winning run. Bach and Bekar were first-team all-stars this year in the OUA loop, both tying for the league lead in runs scored (22). Bach hit .373, Bekar hit .338 and Salmon hit .359 this year.
