St. Thomas Aquinas student Colleen Hennessy won the junior girls' division (finishing more than a minute ahead of her nearest competitor), Paulina Maher edged out Loyola teammate Alicia Knox for the senior girls' crown, and Daniel Mathie of Abbey Park was victorious in the midget boys' race. In all, 38 local runners qualified for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) cross-country championships, which are scheduled for Nov. 3 in Niagara Falls. The top two five-person teams in each division earned OFSAA entries, as did the top three individual finishers not on qualifying teams. Schools to qualify teams for OFSAA include White Oaks (midget girls), Abbey Park (junior girls, senior girls, midget boys), Loyola (senior girls) and Holy Trinity (junior boys). Abbey Park finished tied with Notre Dame for the overall meet championship. Following is a list of local top-10 finishers as well as OFSAA-qualifying athletes. DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER UNBEATEN WILDCATS: White Oaks junior girls' basketball player Nevena Aksin dribbles away from a Bishop Reding Royals opponent Thursday at White Oaks. The Wildcats defeated Reding 36-21 to finish the regular season with a 9-0 record. White Oaks girls yet to taste league defeat By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR The walls of the White Oaks Secondary School gymnasium are decorated with blue and gold striping, Wildcats logos and lists of the school's past Halton championship squads. White Oaks' junior girls' basketball team hopes to give reason to add to that artwork in the next two weeks. "It's been a goal of ours, to get on that wall," said Wildcats guard Lana Marcy. White Oaks rolled through its Division 2 schedule this year, concluding the regular sea- son with a 9-0 mark after easily downing the Bishop Reding Royals 36-21 Thursday at White Oaks. The undefeated showing is a marked turnaround from last year, when the Wildcats struggled to a 1-7 mark. Coaches Ryan McLaughlin and Allan Marcy attribute the improvement to an influx of talented Grade 9 students and the overall athleticism of their squad. New to the team this year are rep players Nevena Aksin, Kiminda Musumbulwa, Ellie Hannaford and Lana Marcy, while Mira Krunic -- known more for her abilities as a volleyball player -- and Gabby Radulescu -- a highly-ranked tennis player and accomplished runner -- have also made an impact. "We anticipated we'd do well... but clearly we didn't anticipate we'd do this well," McLaughlin said. "This is a huge deal for White Oaks. The girls are happy, the school is happy, and the school is behind the girls." In compiling their 9-0 record, the Wildcats were only severely tested once in league play -- a 45-42 win over the T.A. Blakelock Tigers earlier this month. That will change in the playoffs, as Division 1 and 2 squads will cross over to determine one Halton junior champion.
