www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 31, 2007 - 15 Rigatoni for Research ready to Toast Ten Nov. 28 A Toast to Ten, the 10th annual Rigatoni for Research Dinner and Silent Auction, is set for Wednesday, Nov. 28. The fundraiser that has become an annual event will be held at Oakville's LeDome Banquet Centre in conjunction with the Hospital for Sick Children. Rigatoni for Research is hosted annually to raise money for brain tumour research, through the Hospital for Sick Children. Each year more than 100 new cases of brain tumors are diagnosed at Sick Kids alone, a statistic which is rising annually at an alarming rate of 20 per cent. In children, brain tumors are the most common malignancy after leukemia, and are the most common solid tumor. A child's best chance is early detection and radical intervention. For far too many innocent children this is not enough and ultimately and tragically, they die. In August of 1997, Kathy and Dan Douthart lost their seven-year-old son Christopher (Kee Kee) to medullablastoma -- a malignant brain tumor. However, they believe Christopher did not lose his battle with cancer, he merely passed on the torch of hope to them. For ten consecutive years, the Doutharts, and a group of dedicated volunteers, the Rigatoni for Research Committee, have organized and hosted this event. The silent auction has grown steadily over the years. Monies raised have been used to purchase vital research equipment at the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre located at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. To date, the committee has raised more than $1 million. It is hoped the 10th annual event will be bigger and better than ever. What began as a ripple has grown into an incredible tidal wave and the Rigatoni for Research Committee thanks those who have helped over the years, and asks those interested in making a donation, sponsoring the event or buying a ticket to contact rigatoni@cogeco.ca.
