"These kids had been in the neighbourhood for quite some time screaming and hollering and carrying on and then all hell broke loose," said a resident who requested not to be identified for fear of retaliation. "They tried to rip our neighbour's fence down." After realizing the youths were attacking property, the homeowner confronted them. In response, the witness says, one of the youths struck the man in the head with a hockey stick. During the ensuing melee, one of the youths was also injured, suffering a cut to his neck, which police say came from someone other than the homeowner. The gang dispersed with the arrival of police, leaving behind a wounded youth, here be ghosts in Oakville. It was Saturday night, 7 p.m., in old Oakville. It was dark and dirty. The moon was a high, distant orb, nearly full, eerie and white but rarely glimpsed between the ragged clouds and the blackness of the tree canopy. Closer to earth a wicked wind lashed the towering trees, creating a demonic din of creaking and wailing. I was tagging along on the Ghost Walk and the apparition leading our band of 20 or so spirit seekers introduced herself as Mary Jane McDougald (born 1826, died 1891). Her voice was barely audible above the crackle of dry leaves under foot and the wind whipping the trees. Spooky. Dressed in a black velvet cape with hood and long skirt, this dour, but not unfriendly spirit had been summoned back from the other side for our enlightenment. In her lifetime, Mary Jane McDougald was the wife of businessman Peter McDougald and a daughter of William and Rebecca Chisholm, Oakville's founding family. Once upon a time she knew virtually everyone in town; plus, she was remarkably spry considering she's been dead for 116 years. Head down, leaning forward, she walked briskly through the dark streets, "Watch out for the horseless carriages," she warned.
