Continued from page 5 "It would be much easier if we had $32 million to build the school because then we would know what it has to offer," he said. "We can say, `These are our plans,' but we cannot promise that there is going to be a brand new school here in the next two years. If we get that kind of funding we can say, `these are the types programs we're going to have, this is the type of building we're going to have,' but we can't promise them that because we don't have that kind of money today." The board's funding problem is amplified by the fact that even if the 400 students are moved to St. Thomas Aquinas, the grant generated is only expected to be around $10 million, leaving the board still $8 million short. "We need a big Christmas present," said Oakville Trustee and Board Chair Alice Anne LeMay. While the option of moving students to St. Thomas Aquinas is not the most popular idea, it is considered "We can say, `These are our plans,' but we cannot promise that there is going to be a brand new school here in the next two years." Lou Piovesan, Education Director a better alternative than some of the other options that were considered. These included eliminating the need for more funds by building the school facility out of lower quality construction materials, however, this contingency did not receive staff recommendation as the short term cost saving gains from this strategy would only translate into higher costs later in the future. Another option that was abandoned early on was using the $14.3 million to renovate and/or partially rebuild the school. Again staff chose not to pursue this course of action as St. Thomas Aquinas has been subject to renovations ever since the Catholic Board bought it from the Public Board for $1 back in 1990. Each time the patchwork had only served to delay the inevitable crumbling of the facility. With the preparation period for the board's budget fast approaching Burlington Trustee Bob Van de Vrande asked if any allocation was being made to the St. Thomas Aquinas project. "Currently we are not, this is a capital item," said Paul McMahon, Superintendent of Business Services and Treasurer. "Could we? Yes, but it would require us to cut somewhere else." With construction currently scheduled to begin in September 2008 the question of, `Will the board have enough money to fund the project by that time,' is probably best answered by the last few lines of Corbacio's report. "At this time the objective appears to be ambitious to achieve." Murron's Cabinetree Christmas Open House Happy Holidays!!
