14 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 10, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Sweet start at Sheridan The 2007 Sheridan College United Way campaign is underway following this morning's kick-off Cinnamon Breakfast, where faculty and support staff donned aprons to serve up freshly baked cinnamon buns with tea and coffee, raising support for the organization which funds non-profit human and social service agencies in Halton region. "Our campaign theme is called `Be a Hero,' and our goal is to increase participation and educate the college community about the important services provided by United Way-funded agencies," says Bobbi Wagner, who coordinated the breakfast. "Over half of all funds donated to United Way are from individual and workplace donations. United Way steps in to provide funding to social services where governments have fallen short." Last year, Sheridan College raised $25,800 for United Way of Oakville and United Way of Peel. The 2007 campaign will continue throughout November. Founded in 1967, Sheridan is a dynamic and innovative institution with over 14,000 full-time and 35,000 continuing education students from across Canada and around the world. Sheridan is nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in programs such as business, digital media and communications, performing arts and visual arts. United Way is a national organization with 125 volunteer-based local chapters across Canada. Next to governments, United Way is the country's largest funder of social services. United Way of Oakville is committed to building strong communities by funding social programs that reduce hunger, homelessness and poverty, and provide assistance to families, abused women and children, older adults, and new immigrants.
