www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 10, 2007 - 17 Pet of the Week Charlie Fund needs support Taking care of abandoned animals is part of the work of the Oakville & District Humane Society. Each month up to 25 injured and/or sick animals depend on the Society's help. When animals require medical attention, providing care can challenge the budget of this charitable organization. Thanks to the support of donations to the Charlie Fund, injured or sick animals find hope at the Humane Society. "The Charlie Fund started as a result of a Border Collie with an injured leg that came to us in 1985," noted Heather White, Community Outreach and Education Manager at the Oakville & District Humane Society. "We fundraised to pay for the surgery." The Border Collie survived and the Charlie Fund was born. "The Charlie Fund is very important to the work we do at the Society," added White. "Surgeries can be expensive. The Fund gives us the ability to help abandoned, medically challenged animals and orphaned animals. Without donations we cannot continue the important work of giving these animals a second chance." "The Charlie Fund really makes a difference. Without it we would have very difficult choices to make with animals in serious medical need. We currently have two animals waiting to use Charlie Fund resources." Heather White, Oakville & District Humane Society FELINE IN SEARCH OF HOME: Andrew is a four-year-old cat awaiting a new home. For more information on animals for adoption at the Oakville & District Humane Society visit www.oakvillehumane.ca. Animals like BK (Broken Kitty), a young kitten found on September 28 at Lower Base Line and Bronte Road, with a broken hind leg and a dislocated hind on the other side. Both legs required surgery. The surgery was completed thanks to the Charlie Fund. For BK, cage rest will take place in the foster home of one of the many volunteers who help support Charlie Fund animals at the Humane Society. Broken Kitty's future will include a minimum of two trips to the veterinarian for follow up and then a second surgery to remove the pins in the legs. The Charlie Fund will make it possible for BK to recover and find a place in the adoption rooms where finding a permanent home will hopefully follow soon after. "The Charlie Fund really makes a difference," said White. "Without it we would have very difficult choices to make with animals in serious medical need. We currently have two animals waiting to use Charlie Fund resources," said White.
