www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 10, 2007 - 29 Every step taken makes a big difference Residents of Oakville took big steps in the fight against breast cancer on Sunday, Nov. 4, raising more than $13, 250 for leading-edge cancer research at this year's Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event. More than 120 people participated in the fundraising walk, demonstrating to women living with breast cancer in the community that they are not alone in their fight. "Not only does the event raise money for important breast cancer research, it's also a wonderful way for the community to come together and show their support for those affected by the disease," says Lisa Moffatt, Fundraising Coordinator of the Oakville Unit. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is a five-kilometre, noncompetitive, family-friendly walk that raises funds for vital breast cancer research. It's also an opportunity for residents to celebrate breast cancer survivors and honour the memory of those who have lost their lives to the disease. The event featured a light breakfast for participants courtesy of Tim Hortons and a Cancer Smart Shop where attendees could pick up information about the Canadian Cancer Society. Sheridan College and Living Well Pilates provided fun for all ages with face painting and demonstrations. Jazzercise kick-started the event with a group warm up while Oakville's own The Last Minute Band kept participants moving during the event. Wave 94.7 FM's Terry Sweeney was the event's emcee. A special thanks goes out to all of the incredible sponsors; Oakville Place, The Oakville Beaver, Wave 94.7 FM, Tim Hortons, Greenshield Canada and Bally Systems Group, for their outstanding support. People living with breast cancer can turn to the Canadian Cancer Society for the support they need to help them cope with their diagnosis.
