The event begins at 7 p.m. in Towne Square, located at Lakeshore and George Street. Mrs. Claus and the Salvation Army Band will lead the crowd in classic holiday carols. The Salvation Army will have two bins on hand at the event accepting non-perishable food items for its annual Christmas Food Drive. It will also be handing out hot apple cider and The Oakville Beaver will once again be providing Songs of Joy, the official book of carols for Downtown Oakville's Tree Lighting Ceremony. At 7:30 p.m., Mayor Rob Burton will light the spectacular tree and the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement's mascot, DOBI, will be at the ceremony for anyone wishing to get their photos taken to capture the special moments of the season. "The Oakville community has been very generous in their donations, as this will help out more families in need to make their holidays bright. I would also like to thank the public for their awareness and continued support," said Bev Gardner, Community Services Co-ordinator for Oakville Salvation Army Stroll through downtown Oakville and browse the shops. Several businesses will stay open late and various local galleries will be hosting their own special events to commemorate the official start of the holiday season.
