www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 7, 2007 - 5 LeMay new board chair Veteran Oakville Catholic school trustee Alice Anne LeMay will remain chair of the Halton Catholic District School Board until the first board meeting in December 2008. A Tuesday night swearing in of new trustee Arlene Iantomasi, who will represent Burlington's Ward 1 & 2, took place only moments before the trustees set about the task of deciding who would be the chair and vice-chair of the board. With the top position up for grabs, LeMay vacated the seat reserved for the chair Tuesday, giving it up to Director of Education Lou Piovesan who then opened the floor to nominations. Milton trustee Rev. David Wilhelm answered that call, nominating LeMay, who accepted. As no other nominations were made, the position was hers. "It's been a very rough year for this board," said LeMay in her victory speech. "But, I do believe with all my heart that if we all pull together we can become the best Catholic board in Ontario. We've got a lot of work to do, but if we work together we can move forward." It was only in April that LeMay, then vice-chair, and former chair Al Bailey were asked to resign by five trustees in a non-binding request that both LeMay and Bailey refused. Bailey would eventually resign in August to spend more time with his family, creating a vacancy in the role of chair, which LeMay filled. LeMay, a 27-year veteran of the Halton Catholic District School Board, continued to function as chair until a Burlington by-election filled Bailey's vacant trustee position on Nov. 26. With LeMay confirmed as chair the board's attention then turned to electing a vice-chair. Existing vice chair and Burlington trustee Joanne Matters sought the role again. With LeMay functioning again as board chair, it was she who called for nominations for the vice chair's job. Oakville trustee Pauline Houlahan nominated Matters while Halton Hills trustee Rosanna Palmieri nominated Burlington trustee Bob Van de Vrande, however, Van de Vrande declined to accept the nomination resulting in a victory for Matters. "I appreciate the support of my colleagues and I'm looking forward to continuing the great work of this board," said Matters. She will remain vicechair until the first board meeting of December 2008. Demand Water Heater A new "tankless" water heater that has no storage tank and therefore no `stand-by' heat loss. Cold water travels through a pipe into the unit, and either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water only when needed, resulting in energy savings and nearly endless hot water. It usually takes less than 2 minutes to heat the water on demand. This is a small price to pay for significant energy savings. ENERGYTIP!
