36 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 12, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Intrada Brass of Oakville lands major grant Intrada Brass of Oakville has been awarded a grant of $80,000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The foundation recently announced the Oakville ensemble has been awarded the money "to initiate the biennial Young Brass Players' Competition in Oakville." The grant will be given to Intrada Brass of Oakville over the course of the next three years. "Outreach performances and promotional activities will also be conducted to help the band build a wider audience base," said a release from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. "This is a serious vote of confidence by OTF in our ability to organize and run a major new performing arts competition, and recognition of our goal to develop young brass players in Halton Region," said Chair of Intrada Brass, Matthew Colley. "The encouragement of young players is part of our mandate and the new competition expands what we are already achieving by having a number of young, talented players as regular members of the ensemble." The bulk of the award will finance the first two editions of a major competition for young brass players in Halton. "The Young Brass Players Competition will challenge and encourage young musicians to strive for excellence on their chosen instruments," said Intrada Brass music director, Bram Gregson. "Their performances will be adjudicated by outstanding players and music educators, who will provide helpful feedback." Prizes will include cash for continued studies and a solo performance with Intrada Brass. The competition will be held in the 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 seasons, and will be open to young brass players from throughout the Region. The band hopes to involve a major music instrument manufacturer and its retailers as co-sponsors. Colley noted the grant includes funds for outreach activities. "We want to remove the `box office barrier' and make the band more widely known. To that end we hope to perform in Coronation Park next summer and offer other performances without admission." The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Its annual funding was boosted to $105 million from $100 million in 2007 and will be further increased to $120 million in 2009-2010. This enhanced funding has resulted in an increase to the maximum amount available for capital grants and the creation of a $2 million Future Fund, which will focus this year on strengthening the impact of organizations working on environmental issues. The grant to Intrada Brass of Oakville is part of $3.2 million awarded to groups in Halton-Peel. For more information on Intrada Brass of Oakville, visit www.intradabrass.ca.
