Oakville Salvation Army kettle drive in danger of falling short of target With Christmas fast approaching the Oakville Salvation Army (OSA) is offering a heart-felt thank you to all who have generously donated money, toys, food or time to help the less fortunate in the Oakville community during this holiday season, however, they also point out that more is needed. The OSA's Christmas Kettle Campaign so far has raised almost $50,000, which is $5,000 short of what the campaign had raised by this time last year. With the campaign set to wrap up on Christmas Eve the OSA is continuing to hope it can reach its goal of $110,000 needed to fund such endeavors as its shelter and housing programs, the food bank and many other initiatives designed to pull people back from the brink of crisis. "People are starting to contribute more," said Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army spokesperson. "We'd be ever so grateful if people continued to give to our Kettle Campaign. We'd greatly appreciate it." Other OSA initiated campaigns have fared much better with donations of toys and food Happy New Year 2008 THINKING NEW YEAR'S EVE? Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army 120 THOMAS STREET, OAKVILLE 905.842.4200 www.jonathansofoakville.com pouring into the OSA's headquarters at 1225 Rebecca St. "The numbers are going high and we're doing pick-ups everyday," said Gardner. "We're moving towards our targets." Gardner noted that the last few pickups netted the OSA around 79 toys, which were donated at the Hopedale Mall while 150 more were donated at Oakville Place. Local companies are also aiding the OSA by sponsoring families in serious crisis and food drives are continuing to bring non perishable food items to the shelves of the food bank. In another victory the OSA succeeded in finding a space for their Christmas Store courtesy of Western Regency Construction who provided them with office space at 407 Speers Rd. During its two weeks in operation the OSA Christmas Store gave those in need the ability to actually choose their children's presents as opposed to getting random wrapped gifts delivered by the OSA to their homes. Gardner noted this Christmas miracle would not have been possible without the generosity of the people who donated this space and those who donated money to pay for the electricity. All other donations are no less miraculous to the people who receive them. "Everyone's giving has made a change in the lives of these families," said Gardner. "I've seen many families cry this week because they're just so grateful for the contributions people have made to them for Christmas, because without them most of these families would just be paying rent and that's it."
