www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 21, 2007 - 15 YMCA responds to families in need and giving feels great I f you had walked into one of the multi-purpose rooms at the YMCA of Oakville on Monday, Dec.17, you would have sworn you had been transported directly to Santa's workshop where the elves were packaging up the gifts. Wrapping paper was flying, gifts and boxes of food were everywhere, and happy chatter was in the air. This was the final wrapping day for the YMCA of Oakville's Holiday Family program a special effort designed to meet the holiday needs of 15 Oakville families. Patty Mills, YMCA Membership Services Team Leader, told how the program got started. "Over the past few years, I have been closely and confidentially connected to families in need through our fee assistance program the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Because we are a char- itable association, we are in touch with many families who really can't provide for their own needs at Christmas time. Some of those families come to us for help, because they don't know where to turn and they know that we are their friends." The shining beacon for this program has been the `Giving Tree' in the front lobby of the Peter Gilgan Family Y. On the tree, instead of ornaments, the committee hung colourful paper cut-outs and on each cut-out was written one `wish' from a family, like "Movie gift certificates" or "Sweater for boy size 8." And the wishes have been filled. Some families have been entirely sponsored by one family or organization, and other individual wishes have been filled by Y members, staff and volunteers. Food has also been distributed along with the gifts. "When I made a call to one single mother of three to tell them when to pick up the items, the teenage son answered and said that mom was not home and he was looking after his brothers and sisters because she works seven days a week. When I heard that, I knew that what we are doing is so important." It's a great week at the Y when we can help others. The YMCA of Oakville is a charitable association open to all, dedicated to providing life-long opportunities for health enhancement and personal growth. -- Submitted by the Oakville YMCA.
