10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 26, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Sheridan represented in three volunteer and leadership awards Three Sheridan College representatives have been recognized for their excellence in leadership and volunteer work. Presented annually by Colleges Ontario, Sheridan has been recognized with three of eight provincial awards, to be presented Feb. 11, 2008 at the Colleges Ontario annual conference in London. Sergeant Kerry McCowell won the Wm. G. Davis Community Volunteer Award. McCowell is a member of the Peel Regional Police Force, and a dedicated advocate for Sheridan's Police Foundations program. He has worked closely with Sheridan to provide students with innovative learning opportunities and, through his own extensive volunteer activities, has inspired them to become more involved in their communities. As a member of the Program Advisory Committee, McCowell was integral to the expansion of the Police Foundations internship program. He also helped to implement the Community Policing Competition -- a two-day event in which the Peel Police provide teams of Sheridan students with real community issues to investigate. Tim Onyschuk picked up the Distinguished Service Award. A full-time faculty member in the Police Foundations program since 1990, Onyschuk has had a significant and positive impact on the program, guided by his vision of combining student learning with community involvement. This vision led to the creation of the Justice Mentor program, a volunteer initiative which connects second-year Police Foundation students with elementary school children to provide support in a variety of activities. More recently, he established the Iron John program, which aims to help impoverished young boys in the community to progress and grow in positive ways. Martin Rutledge was the third Sheridan recipient, awarded the Student Leadership Award. A third-year student in the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Animation) program, Rutledge is recognized for his support to his fellow students as both a peer tutor and as an active member of the Animation Student Council. A single father, Rutledge is also an avid volunteer at his daughter's school. "We are very proud of our award winners. Each of them has made a significant contribution to the quality of life at Sheridan and in our community," said Sheridan College president Robert Turner. The Colleges Ontario Awards were established in 2000 to recognize individuals and organizations who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of Ontario's college system.
