12 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 2, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Holiday tea Ever Faithful book was labour of love As St. John's United Church celebrated 175 years, Oakville resident Joyce Stephenson, who has belonged to the congregation for 40 of those years, is helping. Stephenson completed an extensive history of the church entitled Ever Faithful. It was a seven-year labour of love covering the history of the church and the people of Oakville as the town grew. The book includes more than 360 photos and maps in 294 pages of history. From the earliest gatherings in the meeting house at the harbour to present day plans of renewal at St. John's, the book records the stories of the people of Oakville. It was 1832 when the early Methodist settlers began meeting in homes around the mouth of the Sixteen-Mile Creek, just after Oakville was established by its founder William Chisholm. Their first church building was dedicated in October of 1840, but was sold to the Anglicans soon after due to lack of funds. A second church was built and dedicated in 1851 at the corner of Randall Street and Dunn Street and the property has continued to be the home of the Methodist come United Church congregation ever since. A third church building, constructed of brick was built in 1877 and still stands today. History buffs will be happy to know that both the Oakville Public Library, Main Branch, and the Oakville Historical Society have copies of this book for public viewing. The book is also available for purchase at Bookers located at 172 Lakeshore Rd. E. and at St. John's United Church located at 262 Randall St. Further inquiries may be directed to jstephenson2@cogeco.ca. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER TRADITION: Hannah, Sarah and Eve Graziadei hosted a Holiday Tea Party for friends and their mothers to benefit Kerr Street Ministries. Guests were encouraged to wear their holiday best, enjoyed tasty treats and shared in the holiday spirit by donating children's gifts to Kerr Street Ministries. This has become an annual tradition for the Graziadei girls. Here, Eve Graziadei pours a cup of tea for Isabella Rett while the other girls wait patiently for their tea. VAILABLE 905 338-1237 Think before you shampoo Hot water and detergents found in some shampoos can dry out hair. Look for nourishing, anti-static shampoos and conditioners specially formulated to fortify hair for winter. Shampooing using warm or cool water will help keep locks shiny, too. Don't skimp on conditioner Be sure to use conditioner every time you wash your hair. Apply it to the ends and leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water to lock in moisture. Once a week, use a heavier moisturizer for a deep conditioning treatment. Wrapping your hair in a towel or plastic bag for 10 minutes creates a warm, humid environment that will allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply.- News Canada 30 % OFF LASER NOW OPEN FULL SERVICE SPA Feel Beautiful on the inside and out!
