www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 7, 2008 - 9 Preserve lakefront Continued from page 6 Ryrie family, Jack Hammell, Jock Gairdner and recently Peter Gilgan) have created one of the most beautiful and historically significant waterfront sites in Canada with a sculptured Japanese garden and pond, a stone tea house, greenhouse and rose gardens featuring several original varieties of rose. The pond located on the large creek, which winds through the west side of the property on its way to Lake Ontario, has been carefully crafted to create a peaceful and spiritual oasis. Marc Hewitt's proposal seems like a thinly disguised attempt to redevelop the property into multiple-unit condominiums, which are quite out of character with the surrounding community and bypass the subdivision planning requirement to sever the waterfront and low lying green spaces and transfer them to the municipality as public spaces. When other large estates were subdivided, this requirement was strictly enforced. Edgemere should not be exempt from this requirement. As those of us who reside in southeast Oakville are keenly aware, we are often short changed when it comes to the provision of municipal facilities (there are no community centres, indoor pools, etc.). Additional lake access with associated green space and a waterfront trail would go a long way towards correcting this oversight.
