The Oakville Fire Department suggests that when homeowners change their clocks, they also change their batteries in their smoke alarms, and test their smoke alarms. "The batteries in your smoke alarms should be changed at least once a year. Pick a day that is easy to remember such as a birthday, anniversary, or in this case, when you change your clocks ahead," said Michael Harrison, Public Education Officer for the Oakville Fire Department. "Batteries should also be changed when you hear the low battery warning beep. You should also replace your smoke alarms if they are more than ten years old." According to Office of the Fire Marshal, most fatal fires occur at night when people are asleep. Often, victims never wake up. A working smoke alarm will detect smoke and sound an alarm allowing precious time to escape. Findings from recent fire investigations in Ontario show that in many cases, smoke alarms were not installed or did not operate because the batteries have been removed. Smoke alarms save lives, but only if properly installed and maintained. Smoke alarms require very little maintenance. Simply test each smoke alarm in the home monthly, using the test button. "In light of the recent tragic losses, we urge everyone to check all of your smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly," said Harrison. "Only working smoke alarms can alert you and your family and give you the precious seconds you need to escape." It is the law in Ontario to have properly installed and working smoke alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas in the home. Since it is very important to install working smoke alarms, failure to comply is considered a serious offence and the Fire Department can issue tickets or fines to the homeowner, tenant and/or landlord. It is also as important to know what to do and where to go when a smoke alarm sounds. Families are encouraged to develop and practice a home fire escape plan. The Oakville Fire Department urges residents to practice fire and life safety at all times.
