www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 24, 2008 - 3 STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2008 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students On May 1, the Halton District School Board held its 24th annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 93 students honoured were 32 from Oakville. The students pictures and their accompanying statements are being published in the Oakville Beaver Weekend edition. This page is the second of three pages featuring the students. · Sean McAnuff, Grade 5, Brantwood: Sean McAnuff is a conscientious Grade 5 student and a quiet leader within the school. He strives to do his best in academics and extra curricular activities while demonstrating a high level of care and concern for everyone. He is a ready volunteer for any task, big or small, and consistently assists others in need. · Emily White, Grade 6, Lorne Skuce: Emily White is a true leader at Lorne Skuce. She is actively involved in all aspects of school life and demonstrates outstanding qualities in all areas. She is the Student Parliament Prime Minister, a member of the Athletic Council, an excellent role model for her peers and participates many extra curricular activities in the school. She is energetic, outgoing, personable, respectful and maintains high standards for herself. · Brett Switzer, Grade 5, Maple Grove: Brett Switzer has shown consistently high academic achievement, excellent leadership, selfimprovement skills, citizenship and exceptional athletic involvement (both at school and outside of school). Both school staff and his peers know Brett to be a student who always strives for excellence and who is dependable, independent in his learning, and supportive to his many friends. · Claire Atherton, Grade 8, Montclair: Claire's positive approach to people and learning will take her far. She is involved in several clubs at school: Book Club, Diversity Club, library helpers, choir, band, track & field and cross-country running. She also finds time to assist in the school office. Claire works hard in school and has been commended for excellent learning skills. · Amna Tariq, Grade 6, Munn's: Amna has demonstrated commitment and excellence in academics in all areas of the curriculum, in citizenship by providing leadership within her class as well as with younger students, and in athletics on school teams and in leading quality daily fitness and recess activities for · Bethany Pehora, Grade 5 Oakwood: Bethany consistently demonstrates a love of learning. When help is needed Bethany enthusiastically volunteers. Bethany immerses herself in extra-curricular activities and is involved in all areas, both athletic and academic. Bethany is an excellent model for students at Oakwood. Kind, thoughtful, compassionate, and driven to do well in all areas, she is well deserving of the school's 2007/2008 Student of Excellence Award. · Daim K. Sardar, Grade 8, Pilgrim Wood: Daim was selected for his contributions in the area of leadership, citizenship and academics. He is an active member of the school's basketball team, intramurals, senior band, mentor for music and Student Council. Daim always demonstrates respect and consideration for others and is therefore a highly regarded member of Pilgrim Wood. · Berkin Cetin, Grade 8 Pine Grove: At Pine Grove events, Berkin is usually fully involved as seen in his role in the School Musical, Think Bowl, cross-country, track & field, basketball, volleyball, and as class rep in Student Parliament. Berkin is involved in many extra curricular activities in the community such as rep soccer, hockey, guitar lessons and snowboarding. Berkin displays excellent citizenship skills and has performed exceptionally well on national math examinations and always produces exemplary work in all academic endeavours. · T.J. Whibbs, Grade 8, Post Corners: T.J. was selected because of his overall outstanding participation as a student. T.J. is an honour student at Post's Corners. He has participated as Deputy Prime Minister of our Student Parliament, member of the volleyball team, coach of the Grade 6 volleyball team, band member, cross-country and track & field participant. T.J. is also a vibrant member of the community participating in hockey, golf, cubs and music lessons. T.J. always displays a responsible, respectful attitude to staff and students. · Steven Lyons, Grade 8, River Oaks: Steven Lyons is a very strong academic student and has been actively involved in our Leadership Council, Music Programs, Lunch Crew, Athletics and our Wee Walkers Program. He is highly respected by staff and students. · Danika Brooks, Grade 5, Sheridan: Danika demonstrates strong academic skills, is involved in co-curricular activities, has strong relationships with peers and adults throughout the school, works willingly with all classmates, is supportive of everyone and demonstrates kindness towards all everyone at Sheridan. Danika is a model of cooperation, achievement, respect and empathy. She demonstrates the qualities of a good citizen and participates in several areas of school life. Natasha works very well with her peers and is cooperative and respectful to staff and students. She takes on challenges with a positive attitude and works diligently to maintain a consistently high level of academic achievement.
