That, obviously, was the dilemma for Nissan when it came time to refresh its popular Murano crossover that was getting a bit long in the tooth. Launched in 2003 as a 2004 model, the Murano was one of the first crossover vehicles-- i.e. a sport utility style body on a sedan platform. It became a best seller and helped spawn an entire class of vehicles that has taken the marketplace by storm. "When Murano was introduced in 2003, there were only nine vehicles in the middle crossover segment. Since then, the segment has grown to more than 30 model offers," said Ian Forsyth, director, corporate and product planning Nissan Canada Inc. For 2009, Nissan created an entirely new second-generation Murano but didn't stray far from the original design concept that has proven to be a success. The look is bolder, featuring a wide front end with a dynamic front fascia design, a wide grille with large integrated headlights and strong body side character lines. It sits on huge 18- or 20-inch wheels and tires and has a commanding presence, both in motion and at ease. The rear end is just as distinctive as before with a large glass area and LED taillights. "The 2009 Murano is an upgrade, not just compared to the previous generation vehicle, but the entire crossover SUV segment," said Forsyth. "With its unique combination of modern design, dynamic performance, new `business class' interior' and overall refinement, Murano continues to stand out as the most distinctive, refined vehicle in class." Speaking of the interior, it features a new instrument panel and centre stack design, along with new seat designs and upgraded materials. Power comes in the form of a 265 hp 3.5-litre DOHC V6, mated with Nissan's Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This gives a boost of 24 hp over the previous model. For Canada, Nissan's intuitive allwheel drive system is standard. This system adjusts torque to wheels, depending on the road conditions in a tenth of a second. For 2009, the Murano comes in three models: S, SL and LE, all featuring all-wheel drive as front-wheel drive models have been discontinued for the Canadian market. My tester was a top-of-the-line LE, which priced out at $51,973 as tested, including $1,400 freight and PDI. The S AWD model starts at $37,648 and comes well equipped with features like dual-zone automatic air conditioning, push button start ignition, 60/40 split rear seat, six -disc CD changer with six speakers and auxiliary audio input jack, 18-inch alloy wheels, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, traction control system with vehicle dynamic control system, front side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags and privacy glass. This model starts at $1,450 lower than the entry-level 2007 model. The SL AWD adds front fog lights, steering wheel mounted audio controls, a leather wrapped steering wheel, eight-way power driver's seat, power flip-up rear seats, an 11speaker Bose audio system with XM satellite radio feature, seven-inch LCD colour display screen with rearview camera, heated front cloth seats and much more, starting at Continued on Page 26
