Nick Karadza, Broker REAL ESTATE AUTHOR The board's decision to close Linbrook, Chisholm, New Central and Brantwood schools and open a new public school at Clearview is not sitting well with a number of southeast Oakville residents, who are intent on reversing this defeat by challenging the validity of the Program and Accommodation Review process. On the community group `My Oakville's website considerable interest is being expressed in the province's Administrative Review of Accommodation Review Process. The legislation allows interested parties to bring to light actions within a specific accommodation review process that are not in keeping with the school board's accommodation review policy. While the legislation itself does not detail what would happen if such inconsistencies were found opponents of the July 2, decision are hoping the board's decision will be thrown out and a new Program and Accommodation Review Committee will be established under provincial supervision. The process would require the group to submit a copy of the board's accommodation review This report courtesy of Nick Karadza, Sales Representative, Great Canadian Realty. Not intended to solicit properties currently under contract. policy highlighting how school board policy was violated. Support for the review would also have to be demonstrated through a petition signed by a number of supporters equal to at least 30 per cent of the affected school's student headcount. Time is also a factor as the petition and justification for the review would need to be submitted to the school board and the Ministry of Education within 30 days of the board's closure resolution. The school board would have the opportunity to review the names on the petition to make sure they are the parents/guardians of students enrolled at the affected schools and/or individuals who participated in the review process. The board would also have 30 days to prepare a response for the Ministry of Education. If all these conditions are met the Ministry of Education is required to undertake a review by appointing a facilitator to determine whether the school board accommodation review process was undertaken in a manner consistent with the board's accommodation review policy. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn noted that he would support such a review. "With the potential closure of four local elementary schools I want to ensure that PARC 14 was fair and unbiased and was compliant with the HDSB's accommodation review policies as well as the guidelines set out by the Ministry of Education," he said. "While declining enrolments in some neighbourhoods may necessitate accommodation reviews, we want to be certain that the proper steps were taken in reaching this decision." Denise O'Connell, a PARC 14 committee member and the parent of a daughter who will be in the first junior kindergarten class at Clearview Public School in 2010, also welcomes such a review. "From my own personal experience on the PARC committee I really don't think there was anything that was done incorrectly or against board policy or anything like that that would lead to an overturning of this decision," she said. "If Kevin Flynn is supporting a review, I say go for it because this has to be an open and democratic process and if a review is what's necessary to make people feel this has been an open and democratic process then by all means." My Oakville will be meeting to discuss the issue further on Monday. Amber Door Spa Our award winning spa is the best kept secret in Oakville!
