Watson S ummer finds many of us on vacation and travelling. Enjoying the weather and the outdoors is a great part of this time of year. On your next adventure remember the impact that your fun may have on local animals and wildlife. Leave only footprints and take only photographs. There are a number of potential hazards that people may unknowingly create when out in natural settings. Campfires, litter, and taking home natural "souvenirs" all have an impact on wildlife and their home. Campfires are functional and important parts of many camp sites. Follow the rules of building a fire only where it is permitted and supervise the fire at all times. Extinguish the fire properly to avoid sparking a forest or brush fire that could potentially place other campers and animals at risk. Campers and picnickers are reminded that their food is also appealing to animals. Litter is a problem. Cans and jars left behind at a campsite or picnic area can become stuck on the legs and heads of animals with a taste for leftovers. The animal could be seriously injured or starve. Food also encourages wildlife to be around people, which may not appeal to everyone. When camping be sure that the food is stored well out of the way of animals looking to augment their daily food intake. Helium balloons used to decorate festive picnic sites also pose a consumable threat to wildlife. Balloons often end up in waterways where they are eaten by water fowl, large turtles and fish. "Leave it the way you found it" is a good rule of thumb when camping or having fun in the outdoors, which includes taking souvenirs. Empty nests, frogs, snakes and bugs are often considered a good take-away reminder of the trip, but consider the impact of removal. Empty nests are O'Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP, Halton's full service law firm, is pleased to welcome Robert A. Watson to our team of specialized professionals. It's best to leave this home where you find it. Frogs, snakes and bugs are wonderful to study in their natural setting. The stress of being removed and kept captive can be harmful. It is best to teach children to watch rather than handle these outdoor attractions, and leave them to thrive in their natural home. Wildlife should be observed from a distance, for both people and domestic animals. When travelling with your dogs and cats, make sure that their rabies vaccinations are current and keep them within eye sight and on a leash. There are lots of wild animals to chase. However, your pet's fun could be traumatic for the wildlife. It could also result in a pet coming home with unwanted porcupine quills or a skunky odour, spoiling both the pet owner's and pet's vacation. Photographs are wonderful ways to capture the fun of summer adventures outdoors. When you spend time in natural settings this summer, remember that leaving only your footprints behind preserves the setting you enjoy and safeguards wildlife.
