Take a Journey in this new Dodge crossover By Lorne Drury METROLAND MEDIA GROUP When the 2009 Dodge Journey was launched earlier this year, Chrysler Canada executives were convinced they had the right vehicle for the times. With gas prices beginning to soar, people were looking to get out of their full-size SUVs in search of something a little easier on the pocketbook. Many were considering going the crossover route (a station wagon-type body mounted on a car frame) and the Journey was taking aim at that highlycompetitive segment that now numbers nearly two dozen vehicles. And for cost-conscious Canadians, the Journey was a vehicle that offers many of the conveniences of a minivan, but starting at under $20K. So how has the `Journey' been for this new Chrysler product? Well, if sales the past couple of months are any indication, the Journey will be a winner. It's already the Number 1 selling crossover in the country with 1,100 units sold in June alone. In the Chrysler hierarchy, the Journey takes the place of the shortwheelbase Caravan, which it no longer offers. Only the full-size Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country are available. For those who have the occasional need to seat seven passengers in a pinch, the Journey may be just the vehicle for them. The third-row seat is offered as an option ($1,175) on all trim levels, giving you a 50/50 split third row seat, which folds flat for added cargo space when not in use. In the real world, this seat is for youngsters only, but it does add another touch of versatility to a vehicle that is one of the most family-friendly on the market. The Journey comes in a variety of trim levels, starting with the base SE, known as the Canada Value Package, priced at $19,995. The mid-level SXT starts at $24,995 ($27,995 for AWD plus 19-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps and performance suspension), while the R/T starts at $27,995 ($29,995 with AWD). The SE is equipped with a 173 hp, 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, mated with a four-speed automatic. The SXT and R/T feature a 3.5-litre V6 with a sixspeed automatic with AutoStick. Standard features include air conditioning, four wheel disc brakes with ABS, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power heated mirrors/door locks, Electronic Stability Control with traction control, brake assist, electronic roll mitigation and trailer sway control, six disc AM/FM MP3 radio and six speakers and rear 60/40 split reclining fold flat seat. Move up to the SE Plus ($20,995) and you get keyless entry, sunscreen glass, floor mats, cargo cover, security alarm, roof rack, speed control and air filter and overhead console with conversation mirror.
