www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 17, 2008 - 19 Making the most of life Continued from page 16 GO SEE: A poster designed to promote tonight's documentary screening. GO debuts at Walton GO will debut at Walton Memorial United Church tonight. The film, about child soldiers and orphans in the country of Uganda, will be screened at the church located at 2489 Lakeshore Blvd. (just west of Bronte Road). "The group hosting this event is called Invisible Children and it works with child soldiers and orphans in the country of Uganda," said Jamie Robertson, associate minister at the church. "This nation (Uganda) has recently come out of a 22-year long civil war in which children were both the weapons and the victims. This is such a tragedy and we are looking forward to learning from this group how we, in Canada, can lend assistance to these children," said Robertson. The documentary being screened tonight is entitled GO. It is about a trio of American residents of San Diego, who went to Uganda in search of fodder for a film and discovered the story that has spawned a humanitarian aid effort. The film is 60 minutes and representatives of Invisible Children will be at the church afterwards to field questions and offer advice as to how to get involved. The screening is part of a Canadian debut, according to Robertson. "We will not be charging admission, but there is a chance for people to donate if they feel so inclined," said Robertson. Yet just because it is different, doesn't diminish those parents' desire to provide the best experiences they can for their child, or the child's desire to experience life. Based on that reality, the Darling Home for Kids is a Godsend to parents and a fun place for kids. There is a wheelchair-accessible swing set and a hydrotherapy pool that may be the closest swim experience a child may get. Then there's the Snoezelen Area that is the epitome of lights, music and sensual stimulation that leaves everyone wondering why they don't invest in one. The brand new capital campaign is the first major campaign to finance a major addition since the home was established and opened in 2004. Specific projects, such as the hydrotherapy pool, have had smaller fundraising campaigns. And annually, about $300,000 is fundraised toward operating costs -- through the home's annual signature events such as a golf tournament and its Comfort and Joy Gala. That, despite the fact that the Ministry of Children's and Youth Services and Ministry of Health contribute $300,000 and $250,000, respectively, each year toward the home's operating costs. More than a decade ago, hockey broadcaster Don Cherry and his family, particularly his daughter Cindy, joined with The Cedarbrook Society to build the paediatric hospice facility in Milton. Today, the home is built, government funding for operations has been secured, and the home has a new backer that took up where the Cherry family left off -- Michèle Darling and her family through its own Halo Foundation. Last night, at Cucci Restaurant on Jones Street, The Cedarbrook Society in support of the Darling Home, launched its 2008 capital campaign. The Darling Home for Kids is set amidst 77 acres of woodland on the Niagara Escarpment in Milton and provides high quality respite and palliative care services to families across Ontario who have children with life-limiting or life-threatening illness requiring complex and/or are technology dependent. Bowker said the home offers care and is particularly busy on long weekends, Christmas and the March break. A March break program operated last year complete with theme days such as Sports Day, Disney Day, Beach Day, and Pajama Day.
