The event is the Canadian Paraplegic Association's (CPA) seventh annual Wheelchair Relay tomorrow (Saturday). It is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon at Saltfleet Secondary School, 108 Highland Rd. W. Burlington public school board trustee Mary Dilly, also the community development co-ordinator for CPA Ontario at its Chedoke site in Hamilton, said relay organizers hope to raise $50,000. Two teams of eight wheelchair participants from the Halton board -- the Superstars (superintendents) and Trusty Trustees (trustees) -- hope to raise about $3,000. "The wheelchair relay can create a greater awareness within the community. This will heighten understanding of the abilities of the spinal cord injured, wheelchair usage and improve accessibility and awareness," said Dilly. "Rehabilitation does not end when an individual leaves the hospital, it is only the beginning. Once they return home to live in the community, the biggest role CPA provides is to assist the individual to regain independence and to fulfill their role within the family and community," she added. Funds from the relay will be used to aid CPA clients in the Hamilton-HaltonNiagara region in the areas of peer support, advocacy and rehabilitation counselling for new and existing spinal cord injured people and their families. The Halton school board has a friendly competition going with the trustees and superintendents of Hamilton's public school board at the relay. Each relay participant will travel about 100 metres in a wheelchair. The event will see Halton board members wearing the costumes of comic superheroes and famous TV or movie characters as part of a costume competition.
