www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 20, 2008 - 13 Amazing Pace in Oakville Tree bylaw coming back at Town Hall The Amazing Pace will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 and those interested in participating can start signing up now. The event, a fundraiser for the Lung Association, will start at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. while the race will begin at noon. The Amazing Pace is a fundraising event that is modelled after the hit TV series The Amazing Race. Teams of four will run through the streets of Oakville, solving clues and competing in challenges along the race route. The first team to arrive at the final checkpoint will win the Amazing Pace and will receive prizes donated by local businesses. The attendance goal is 25 teams or at least 100 participants and 30 volunteers. As it is a pledged-based event, organizers hope to raise $20,000. Mayor Rob Burton will be the starter for the race and fitness instructors will be lead participants through a warm up. For information, call the Lung Association at 905-696-0077 or visit www.on.lung.ca. Oakville is moving closer to a Private Tree Protection Bylaw. The bylaw, which would make permits necessary to remove trees with a minimum height of 1.37 metres that measure eight inches (20 cm) or more in diameter, will be examined by the Community Services Committee on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. The public is invited and recommendations will go to council Monday, Sept. 29. "As a result of what we heard from the public, Council directed staff to create a bylaw to reduce clear-cutting and protect the mature trees that enhance our forest canopy, without being overly restrictive for the homeowner who is already an effective steward of their own trees," said Mayor Rob Burton. Under the bylaw no permit would be required to remove trees smaller than eight inches (20 centimetres) in diameter. Homeowners will also be allowed to remove up to four trees measuring between eight and 30 inches (20 and 76 centimetres) in diameter within a 12-month period by completing a no-fee notification permit with the Town. To remove five or more trees, residents will be required to apply for a permit at a cost of $200 per tree. The fee for the permit rises up to $500 for any tree of more than 76 centimetres in diameter. The bylaw features an appeal process -- at $200 per tree -- to be heard by council through the Community Services Committee. A copy of the staff report and draft bylaw is available at www.oakville.ca or from Town Hall's Clerk's Department. Food drive needs volunteers Oakville's Fareshare food bank needs volunteers to hand out paper bags to collect food donations during the upcoming Thanksgiving food drive that begins Oct. 4. Volunteers are needed to stand at the entrance to the Great Canadian Superstore at Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street to hand out bags for shoppers entering the store to fill with food donations. The volunteer work is ideal for students, but everyone is welcome to apply. Call 905-845-8014 in the evenings.
